Who is a bully?
A noisy, blustering fellow, more insolent than courageous; one who is threatening and quarrelsome; an insolent, tyrannical fellow.
What kind of person is a bully? Ralph Waldo Emerson gives us a nice description.
Far off, men swell, bully, and threaten; bring them hand to hand, and they are feeble folk.
Anna Julia Cooper is more explicit
Bullies are always cowards at heart and may be credited with a pretty safe instinct in scenting their prey.
A very nice description. A coward. With an instinct that the prey will not strike back.
A BULLY IS A BIG COWARD
Conrad Black throws more light...
... in my mind bullies are intolerant of contrary opinion, domineering and rather cowardly.
River Phoenix illustrates with an example.
When I was old enough to realize all meat was killed, I saw it as an irrational way of using our power, to take a weaker thing and mutilate it. It was like the way bullies would take control of younger kids in the schoolyard.
All of us meat-eaters are in a sense, bullies.
Anna Julia Cooper says that those who discriminate against the blacks in America are bullies too.
Humanity from the first has had its vultures and sharks, and representatives of the fraternity who prey upon mankind may be expected no less in America than elsewhere. That this virulence breaks out most readily and commonly against colored persons in this country, is due of course to the fact that they are, generally speaking, weak and can be imposed upon with impunity. Bullies are always cowards at heart
The following quotes are from bullyonline
"One would not expect a victim of rape to have to single-handedly identify, trace, catch, arrest, prosecute, convict and punish the person who raped her. Targets of bullying often find themselves doing all of these whilst those in positions of authority persistently abdicate and deny responsibility."
There is little difference between bullying and rape. The mentality is the same.
"The serial bully, who in my estimation accounts for about one person in thirty in society, is the single most important threat to the effectiveness of organisations, the profitability of industry, the performance of the economy, and the prosperity of society."
Despite knowing this one fails to understand why society tolerates bullying. One hardly sees anyone rebuking a bully. Strange. And stupid.

IN A LIGHTER VEIN....
Why did the school bully kick the classroom computer?
Someone told him he was supposed to boot up the system.

"Bullying consists of the least competent most aggressive employee projecting their incompetence on to the least aggressive most competent employee and winning."
Yeah it is unfair. The talented is the targeted by the lesser one just because he/she cannot face their own limitation. That is why bullying is unfair.
"Only the best are bullied."
One can be sure that the target of bullying is very exceptionally talented.
"Nothing can prepare you for living or working with a sociopathic serial bully. It is the most devastating, draining, misunderstood, and ultimately futile experience imaginable."
Dealing with a bully is a real pain in the a**. We know it is wrong but we have tolerate it.
A bully destroys lives.
"The best indicator of a sociopathic serial bully is not a clinical diagnosis but the trail of devastation and destruction of lives and livelihoods surrounding this individual throughout their life."
"Being bullied by a serial bully is equivalent to being stalked or being battered by a partner or being abused as a child and should be accorded the same gravity."
And what happens when bullying leads to suicide?
"When bullying results in suicide (bullycide), the coroner usually records an open verdict. Unlike a physical injury or physical cause of death, a psychiatric injury cannot be studied and recorded after death. All the coroner has is (sometimes) the suicide letter and (always) the denial of everyone who contributed to the bullycide: the bullies, the witnesses of bullying, and those in authority who should have acted but didn’t. Invariably greater weight is attached to these denials than to the written and reported testimony of the deceased who has been tormented to death and to the deceased’s family who have lived through (and continue to live) the nightmare. An open verdict, which may be legally correct, is not going to relieve the suffering of the family or enable the perpetrators to be held accountable for their sins of commission and omission."
And under which conditions does bullying thrive?
"Bullies thrive wherever authority is weak"
The destruction wrought by bullying....
"Whilst accidents and assaults injure and kill people quickly and spectacularly, bullying and consequent prolonged negative stress injure and kill people slowly and secretively. The outcome, though, is the same."
"Good management and bullying have as much in common as great sex and rape."
Yeah bullying occurs where there is weak authority and lousy management.
Emerson teaches us some Political Science.
Democracy becomes a government of bullies tempered by editors
Harvey S. Firestone has some very valuable advice for targets of bullying...
Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one's definition of your life, but define yourself.
Randy Harrison tells us more....
The bullying stopped when I claimed myself and proved that I wasn't afraid
I think if you have the opportunity to bully your opponent then you have to take that chance.
VENUS WILLIAMS
I don't think Venus Williams is a nice person.
Lord Shaftesbury emphasises the point that bullies are cowards.
True courage is cool and calm. The bravest of men have the least of a brutal, bullying insolence, and in the very time of danger are found the most serene and free.
I found one day in school a boy of medium size ill-treating a smaller boy. I expostulated, but he replied: ‘The bigs hit me, so I hit the babies; that’s fair.’ In these words he epitomized the history of the human race.
That is what we were talking about in an previous article. That we have accepted Darwin's Theory and decided that since we too are animals it is fine to act like animals. But we forget that if man is an animal biologically, he is the only animal that has the potential to rise above animality. Gandhi, Mandela, Lincoln..... There are many examples of good men and women. Why not learn from them?
